Climate Change

Join the Homestead

Little Suzie Homesteader is a resource for and a growing community of people facing the challenges of living in a polluted environment. Our individual struggles are unique and our symptoms vary, but we are collectively seeking ways to regain our mental, physical and spiritual health and to free ourselves from the effects of pollutants in our world.

Won’t you join us?

What’s a Homestead?

A homestead is space where you are protected from anything or anyone who might harm you. In this case, chemicals.

Maybe it's moving out of the city and away from other people.

Maybe it’s buying or growing organic food.

Maybe it’s making your own cleaning products, finding scent-free detergents and soaps, or getting friends and family to stop wearing perfumes around you.

Whatever it is for you, it’s taking back your power.

When you think of the word “homestead,” what comes to mind?

Depending on your situation, it could either mean where you and or your family originated-- returning to the "homestead," or it might mean taking a tax advantage-- the homestead exemption which protects your primary residence from bill collectors and property taxes, or it could mean gardening, learning forgotten skills, raising animals, and creating a place that is more sustainable.

The kind of homestead I'm talking about is a combination of all of those. When you have chemical sensitivity you long for a time when "home" was a safe place, where you could put down roots so you might re-equip and re-do your house to keep out toxins. You hunger for a place where you can protect yourself from anyone or anything that might harm you-- scents and perfumes, unfiltered water, mold so you ask your friends and relatives to consider your sensitivities and you never buy anything that smells. You've searched endlessly for foods and personal products that don't make you ill so you've started making, growing, and creating most of things you used to buy. For me, a homestead is about not only taking control of my environment, but my mind and my body as well.

Little Suzie Homesteader strives to be a resource you can use to control your space. It is a place where you can:

  • Learn how to be safe & put down roots.

  • Learn how to protect yourself from toxins.

  • Learn how to make & do things for yourself.

Little Suzie Homesteader is about taking back your life.

A homestead is where you get the power to live in a chemically-saturated world.

The first step is to get control of your mind. Without a focused, hopeful, can-do attitude, you will not have the physical energy to face the constant onslaught of exposure to pollutants.

The next step is to get control of your body. Most "sensitives" understand how random their symptoms are. Without warning, exposures create foggy headedness, uncontrollable itching, spasms, asthma attacks, involuntary emotional responses, and more. The lengths we'll go do in order to control those responses border on the absurd, but we do it in order to gain control of our bodies. And that means getting control of our environment.

The final step is to get control of the earth. That sounds like a huge undertaking, but it's actually the foundation of getting control of our minds and our bodies. Clean air, clean water, and a way to prevent exposures to pollution is the ultimate goal. We start with our own little space and extend it until we can comrotably and safely become activists. If that level of physical and mental health never comes, then we can always emotionally and/or financially support others who are working toward a clean environment.

No one can create your homestead for you.

If you aren't willing to try whatever it takes to push back against chemical sensitivity, then you probably aren't going to feel better any time soon. You have to go into this with the belief you can win. That's where hope comes in. Hope gives you that spark to come up with a strategy and regardless of how many setbacks you have, keep coming up wtih more and more and more ways to beat it. The best part about hope is it's free. Some people are just naturally more hopeful than others, but it isn't something only the non-sensitive people have. You can do things to increase your hope. A hopeful outlook naturally leads to feeling encouraged. When you feel encouraged, you are more likely to do things that support a healthy mindset, body and environment. You are more likely to see how others are supporting you in handling chemicals and you are more likely to surround yourself with people who support your goals-- to become healthy and to create a healthy environment.
